("idiots savant" , "abnormal people" aren't expressions or judgements in negative sense ) "Normal people" can not give answers to the question if a big number (ex. 6536542534521) is prime without computer power in resonable time. But there are "abnormal" people who can do this easily and quickly. Idiot savants are a group of human beings who are incapable of reading and writing, yet they have unlimited access to specific, accurate knowledge in the fields of mathematics, music, and other areas. Now the irony of an idiot savant is that this group of individuals do not acquire knowledge by learning as the average human being does. They mysteriously 'know' explicit and correct information. One may ask: "How do idiot savants know certain information or possess certain skills?" By whatever means they obtain this information, they undermine current definitions about intelligence. Do their knowledge show that a source of intelligence exist? Is it possible to tap into this source and not know of its existence? Dustin Hoffman made idiot savants famous in the Hollywood movie "Rain Man." He played the role of a mathematical genius, able to keep track of cards at casinoes, yet unable to go to the bathroom alone or to make simple decisions about what clothes to wear or what food to eat. Modern science cannot explain this phenomena. The physician, Oliver Sacks describes in his book "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat " a story about the twins John and Michael, who were able to define prime numbers up to 20 digits!!! very quickly. They had the biggest difficulties with the simplest additions and substractions. Divisions and multiplications were impossible. They said,"we can see these prime numbers!!" Ian Stewart has a theory about modular arithmetics, but it doesn't work as a satisfying explanation of this phenomena. |
